I hadn’t expected to experience such pleasure from the drive; it was a surprise which made me feel really good to be alive. These are moments that won’t be forgotten – nature has so many and I was there to see one. The simple pleasures of life!
Simple pleasures, for me, are when I’m aware of the power of nature, when I ask myself ‘Is that real?’ and when I remind myself that nature can be truly spectacular.
It can happen when I walk along the beach, the sea lapping at my feet, the sun shining, watching sailing boats and ships far away on the horizon. There is an air of tranquility that makes me feel calm yet exhilarated.
Many may feel the same when they first see their baby or their grandchild. The miracle of life as portrayed by a new-born is an inexplicable wonder. When a delicate but perfectly-formed hand clutches at your finger, it’s a miracle. A baby’s first smile, first words or first steps are memories to treasure.
Others get pleasure from their pets. When love given to a cat or dog is reciprocated, a special bond develops. A cat may purr as it lovingly gyrates in undulating turns around your lower leg; a dog may wag its tail and look up with loving eyes. The unconditional love received by the owner of a pet is pure devotion. The pet seems to read its master’s mind and wants to please them.
Being aware of nature’s splendour enables us to experience these moments of bliss - how a sunset can be so exquisite and how elated a baby or pet can make one feel. I hope that I continue appreciating these simple pleasures for the rest of my life.
